1. Design tips for content creators

Flyers are designed for outreach and promotional purposes. Keep in mind some best practices before designing your flyer.

  • Stick to the 4 Ws when designing your flyer: inform your audience using the “who, what, when, and where.

  • Less is more is the most important concept for effective flyer designs, including less text.

  • Break down your different pieces of text in order to make your flyer easy to scan and read and use white spaces.

  • Provide a call-to-action (CTA) to indicate the “next step” for your audience.

For online or print materials, similar tips apply for booklets, brochures, and postcards.

To work collaboratively, you may contact your designer in advance.

Flyers are design materials that allow for more creative design, especially if they are part of a campaign.

For regular communication flyers, the following are some best practices:

  • use brand fonts for reading purposes
  • use your program branded colours
  • if adding photos, stick to photography branded guidelines
  • keep in mind the alignment of text and other visual elements
  • work with flyers with standard dimensions (half a letter size for print, or letter size for online versions)

For creative flyers that are part of a campaign:

  • you may use unconventional fonts for display titles or CTAs
  • you may use brighter colours
  • you may use different flyer dimensions (check first)
